Daniel 2
Nebuchadnezzar's dream of a colossal statue is the first and most accessible of Daniel's visions. It maps world history in four metals β and ends with the only kingdom that never falls.
"You are the head of gold." Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar directly β his empire was the first kingdom represented in the dream. Babylon stood alone at the top, the most glorious of all the kingdoms to follow. (Daniel 2:38)
Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar was the dominant world empire from 605β539 BC. Herodotus wrote of its astounding wealth β gold-covered temples, gold statues, palaces lined with gold. The Ishtar Gate remains one of the wonders of the ancient world. Babylon fell exactly as Daniel described: in a single night, to the Medes and Persians (Daniel 5).
Daniel himself was brought to Babylon as a captive teenager. The God who ruled over Nebuchadnezzar's golden empire was already preserving the line that would lead to Christ β and giving Daniel the wisdom to interpret what no one else could see.
βThe great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.β
